Why You Should Consider a Winter Session - Ottawa Lifestyle Photography

As I write this, it’s below freezing and the City of Ottawa is preparing for another snowstorm to add to the 5 feet of snow we have already. There are times I don’t love winter. However, as a photographer, there are times I definitely do. My most recent session is one of those times.

While I think the everyday, sometimes “mundane”, phases of life are amazing and worth documenting, milestone events have their own special reasons to be captured. And graduation certainly is one of those milestones. The lovely Chloe is graduating high school shortly and wanted to mark the occasion with an outdoor lifestyle couples photography session for her and her beau. She intentionally chose a winter session as she knew how the snowy setting would perfectly accent her gorgeous red gown. Girl has great taste. We spent an hour walking around Ottawa’s Dominion Arboretum, them canoodling and playing, me ignoring the fact my toes had gone numb from the cold. 100% worth it by the way. Just see for yourself below.

Here’s why you should consider a winter photo session in Ottawa, too:

  1. It’s Unique: Early summer and Mid-Fall are by far the most popular time for photos. If you’re looking to have greater date flexibility, avoid crowds, and have something that’s a bit different than almost everyone else then Winter photo sessions might just be for you!

  2. Winter layers: Outfits are important and elevate the look of your final photos. Cameras love layers and textures. Faux fur blankets, jackets, chunky knit sweaters, wool hats with fluffy poms, and long colourful scarves shine here and add movement and interest to your photos.

  3. Soft, reflected light and earlier sunsets: During Winter, the sun sits lower in the sky and is less harsh compared to summer. It also sets much earlier, which is great when you have little ones with 7 pm bedtimes. Plus, the frequent cloudy skies and all that beautiful snow act as a giant reflector creating beautifully diffused light.

  4. It’s fun! For young and old alike, who doesn’t love to kick around some snow every now and then? And if you know me, you know I like to incorporate movement, cuddles, and play in my sessions and the snow makes a great incentive for all of it.

Have I convinced you? If you’re up to brave the cold a little bit (my Winter sessions tend to be quicker than my typical 1 hour outdoor sessions, especially with young kids!), let’s chat! I’ll bring the hot chocolate!
